Carl Michael Yastrzemski was born on August 22, 1939 in Southampton, New York to Carl Yastrzemski, Sr. and Hattie Skonieczny. He grew up on the family's potato farm and played sandlot baseball in his youth. He briefly attended college at Notre Dame on a basketball scholarship. Shortly after leaving Notre Dame he signed with the Boston Red Sox organization that sent him to the minor league team the Raleigh Capitals in 1959. That year he lead the minor league with a batting average of.377.

Yaz as he was affectionately called began playing professional baseball in 1961. He replaced the legendary Ted Williams who retired after the 1960 season. Yaz proved himself worthy as a replacement in left field and was a success at the plate also. In 1966 he also fulfilled his promise to his parents to finish college and received his degree in Business from Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass.

His career with the Boston Red Sox spanned 24 years when he retired on October 22, 1983. During this time Yaz received many awards and honors. He was selected to play in the All-Star game 18 times. He was honored 7 times with the Gold Glove, named American League MVP, MLB All-Star MVP and was awarded the Hutch Award. His career stats are also impressive playing in 3308 games with a lifetime batting average of.285, 3,419 hits with 452 home runs and 1844 RBIs. He was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 the same year the Boston Red Sox retired his uniform # 8 the number he had worn his entire career with the team.

Today this baseball great is an instructor with the Boston Red Sox. He has been honored with throwing out the first pitch in Game 1 of the 2004 and 2008 World Series. Yaz still ranks #2 for the number of games he played and #3 for his times at bat. His love for the game is shared by his grandson Michael who also plays left field and who also was drafted by the Red Soxs in 2008.
