LG BD670: The Pros
LG BD670 Prices
Price: Although there are a few other similarly-priced models available on the market, the LG BD670 really is excellent value considering it supports 3D, online media services, and lets you play your own photos, videos and music on the device. It's also now widely available for a lot less than the RRP: affordable to pretty much everyone!
Boot Up Time: Blu-ray players are notorious for their slow load up times. Thankfully, the LG BD670 is rather fast for a Blu-ray player, meaning you won't have to wait too long to start watching a movie after you've inserted the disc.
3D Compatibility: These days, more and more Blu-ray players are including 3D compatibility as standard. It's a useful feature to have, as it means you won't need to replace your Blu-ray player when you do decide to upgrade to a 3D television. Thankfully it won't bump up the price too much, either.
Connectivity: You can get your LG BD670 online either by using the wired Ethernet connection or by connecting to a Wi-Fi network – without the need for a separate Wi-Fi dongle. This gives you access to a wide range of online features (see below). There's also a USB port that'll allow you to connect an external hard drive, camera or MP3 player for viewing photos and videos and listening to music.
This player supports a great range of file formats, so will really appeal to those who want something that makes it easy to play other media besides just discs. Because the device is DLNA certified, you can also stream content from other devices on your home network. An excellent bonus for a device in this price range.
HD Quality Audio: The LG BD670 supports the newest HD sound formats. To take advantage, set this player up to a 7.1 channel surround sound system – you'll experience the sound coming at you as if you were at the movies.
Online Features: Once connected to the internet, you'll have access to a range of online media streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, Pandora, YouTube and so on. The device also supports BD-Live which will give you access to interactive content on compatible Blu-ray discs.
One of the best things about the LG streaming media services is that the interface is so easy to use. It's up there along with Panasonic's interface as one of the best offered on any Blu-ray player. And, although Sony may technically offer a greater range of streaming media services in its devices, the services on offer on this player are some of the highest rated. It's one of the only players to offer all of these premium services: Netflix, Amazon Video and Hulu Plus.
Playback Resume: Although many Blu-ray players now offer this feature, it's worth noting that the LG BD670 will remember where you finished watching if you stop watching a movie halfway through. When you put the disc back in, it'll play again right from that point.
Good Remote And On Screen Menu: The remote control and menu system on the player are generally easy to use, with good directions that'll help you find exactly what you need to. Unfortunately, however, the controls on the front panel are very dim, meaning that they're difficult to see from any distance.
LG BD670: The Cons
Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues: Some users have complained of the wireless signal dropping out, which can be a real pain when streaming media from the internet. Sometimes, even when the signal is strong, the player will also slow down or freeze during online playback. This is, however, not widespread and seems to depend on the specific unit. Overall, the player has received positive reviews from buyers.
Is The LG BD670 Worth Buying?
The LG BD670 is an excellent choice for those who want a range of networking features within a single well-priced player. At around $200, this is an excellent price to pay for online media streaming (e.g. Netflix), home media sharing using DLNA or USB, and a good quality 3D blu-ray player for watching movies. The only real downside is the fact that some customers have experienced issues when streaming media from the internet – but this seems to be limited to some defective units. All in all this is an excellent player at a very good price.
